Jordan Montgomery: Montgomery takes no-decision in Major League Baseball debut

The New York Yankees won their home opener defeating the Rays 8-1 on Monday afternoon.

Evan Longoria, long a Yankee-killer in his career, broke up the bid for a ideal game with two outs in the seventh, lining a hanging first-pitch slider - one of the few misplaced pitches of the 93 Pineda threw - down the leftfield line for a double.

Yankees starter Michael Pineda had everything working in his team's home opener against the Rays in the Bronx on Monday.

Former Sumter and USC pitcher Jordan Montgomery will make his Major League Debut Wednesday afternoon for the New York Yankees.

Martha Stewart is public enemy No. 1 among New York Yankees fans right now. The Rays' lefty got the next two batters out after a seven-pitch at-bat against Pete Kozma and a first-pitch popout by Jacoby Ellsbury. "Really, he made two mistakes - one to me that he made and the one that Morrison hit out of the ballpark".

Mongtomery pitched before a far larger crowd Wednesday, one that included proud parents Raury and Jim.

The No. 3 starter set down the first 20 batters he faced in order over 6.2 innings and was just seven outs away from the 24th flawless game in Major League Baseball history. But the bullpen couldn't hold the lead for the first time, giving up its first runs of the season and losing 7-3 to the Yankees.

TIGERS 2, RED SOX 1 Justin Verlander and Chris Sale dominated in a matchup of ace pitchers before Nicholas Castellanos singled in the go-ahead run off Sale in the eighth inning lift host Detroit to a victory.

Aaron Judge hit the game-tying home run in the eighth inning, and Starlin Castro lined the tiebreaking single in the ninth after two more walks.

The game was interrupted by a scary moment.

Judge's sixth-inning RBI single against Jumbo Diaz (0-1) - measured at 116.5 miles per hour off the bat - tied the score 3-3, and the Yankees had runners at the corners and when Brett Gardner hit a one-out comebacker. Matt Holliday took over Rodriguez's stall to Gardner's left, and Austin Romine moved into Gardner's old space toward the centre of the room.

Both walked off the field. The manager was pleased with the focus and mentality, More so it was the Michael Pineda the Yankees have come to expect and on this day it was more. They'll likely be without Weeks, who is day-to-day with neck and right shoulder soreness. "I thought he had a shot".

He also is likely to miss Thursday. "His stuff is really good - he's able to use his breaking ball extremely well, and when he locates his fastball it's good - and he has different ways he can get you out". Since then, he has gone 0-8 with a 7.84 ERA in 13 starts with NY.

Judge reached in his last three plate appearances and had a hand in NY rallying from a 3-0 deficit in the fifth.

"He looks like someone who can help us for quite some time", general manager Brian Cashman said.

Montgomery had a dream start to his major league career, striking out the first two Tampa Bay Ray batters he faced Wednesday. "There's a lot of emotions that go into that".

"That's something I learned at SC", said Montgomery, who thew 89 pitches, 61 for strikes. He had only one 1-2-3 inning. However it was his performance in the minors a year ago that more than likely got Montgomery the call up. While it is still very early in the season, yesterday's win was much needed for the Yankees, who avoided their first 1-5 start since 1989.

Errors by shortstop Tim Beckham and Cedeno led to four unearned runs.

"We've got to play cleaner games", Cash said.

To clear a 40-man roster spot for Montgomery, the Yankees designated RHP Johnny Barbato for assignment.

Montgomery was selected by the Yankees in the fourth round (No. 122 overall) of the 2014 MLB Draft. "He's facing some decisions", Cashman said.
