James Harden explains why he deserves this year's MVP award

Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook stretches before a game against the Denver Nuggets Sunday

In another mind-altering display, Russell Westbrook passed Oscar Robertson's single-season triple-double record before downing the Denver Nuggets at the buzzer for a 106-105 Oklahoma City Thunder win.

A triple-double is achieved when a player records double figures in three of either points, rebounds, assists, steals, or blocked shots - such achievements make you a bit of an all-rounder. But there's also a long-standing record that the other leading MVP candidate, James Harden, is poised to break. How many wins would they have if Westbrook (a) wasn't doing what he's doing or (b) wasn't on the team period? With Oklahoma City's playoff fate already decided - the Thunder will face Houston in the first round - it may be Westbrook's final triple-double of the season.

After Jokic missed, Westbrook grabbed the rebound and the Thunder called timeout with 2.9 seconds left. For he has come down from Southern California, not to do My own will, but the will of Jerry West (who is exhausted of Oscar Robertson being the only to average a Triple-Double in a season). His 10th assist of that game was a kick out to Doug McDermott for a three-pointer with 1:23 remaining in regulation to give the Thunder a 98-95 lead.

The Oklahoma City Thunder and the Minnesota Timberwolves do battle at the Target Center on Tuesday night. With the triple-double, he broke Robertson's previous record of 41, which stood since the 1961-1962 season with the Cincinnati Royals.

"I admire Westbrook's all-around command of the game". I'm just very thankful and blessed to be able to go out and compete on the highest level.

As if to put an exclamation point on the historic feat, he also scored 50 points on the night and capped off the game with a buzzer-beater to knock the Denver Nuggets out of playoff contention. The last player for the franchise with more than one triple-double in a season was Gary Payton, in 2002, when the team was the Seattle SuperSonics. He also joined the legendary "Big O" as the only two players in National Basketball Association history to average a triple-double in a single season.

"I think that's the most important thing", Harden said.

Gallinari scored 22 points in the third quarter to give Denver a 14-point lead heading into the fourth, but the Thunder (46-34) rallied to get within two on Westbrook's layup with 27.1 seconds left.
