FILE - In this October 7, 2012, file photo Dan Rooney watches warm ups before an NFL football game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Eagles in Pittsburgh.

Rooney, the son of Steelers founding owner Art Rooney, was admitted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2000. The Steelers won five of their six Super Bowls under Rooney (first one in 1974).

Yesterday, the Pittsburgh Steelers announced the death of former president, Dan Rooney.

Dan Rooney, the former USA ambassador to Ireland, has been praised for his "deep commitment" to the country and the Irish people after his death on Thursday.

Operating the team since the 1960's, Rooney took over the family legacy from his father who founded the franchise. It has been incredibly beneficial for many minority candidates, including current Browns coach Hue Jackson as well as Steelers coach Mike Tomlin. More than that he was a great friend who was a man of principle and a role model for any of us privileged to be a part of the NFL.

President Barrack Obama: Rooney served as an ambassador to Ireland under President Obama.

Commissioner Roger Goodell: Goodell referred to Rooney as one of his biggest advisers of the past several seasons.

Former Steelers coach Bill Cowher was among the many paying tribute to Rooney. Our thoughts and prayers will remain with Patricia, Art, the Rooney family and the entire Steelers organization.

"In 2007, Mr. Rooney afforded me the opportunity to lead the football team he helped guide throughout his life".

Rooney is also well remembered at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, a Benedictine-run school that has been the training camp of the Steelers for 51 years.
