GGG outlasts Jacobs in close unanimous decision

Gennady Golovkin vs. Daniel Jacobs Boxing Odds and Predictions

It's headlined by Gennady Golovkin putting his WBA, WBC and IBF middleweight belts on the line against Daniel Jacobs. People haven't seen the best of Danny Jacobs yet. "I needed a quality fight, not just the 12th round". He went 12 rounds against a very good fighter and shed the label as just a slugger.

In the end, it was a close fight that I thought could have gone either way. For me to be a part of it, I want to have a great legacy.

For the first time in nine years, Golovkin failed to finish his opponent via knockout as he edged Jacobs via a unanimous decision.

After 10 rounds, the AP had Golovkin ahead 96-93, with Jacobs winning the 10th, after three straight rounds for Golovkin.

Fight fans can only hope it will go down as Golovkin's Mugabi moment, a callback to the 1986 fight between Marvin Hagler and John Mugabi where Hagler was made to labor harder than expected for an 11th-round stoppage.

But when the final bell of the 12-round slugfest rang, many in the crowd thought Jacobs, a Brooklyn native, had pulled out the victory.

"Golovkin is defending his IBF title, however, Jacobs can not acquire the title with a victory because he did not participate in the required IBF same-day weigh-in", IBF championships chairman Lindsey Tucker said. "I am like an animal for that fight".

Despite some early projections that the fight would sell out the arena, it came a few seats short of doing so.

Even though Sor Rungvisai was docked a point in the sixth round for another head-butt - there were several in the brutal bout - he never backed off.

In the ninth, Gonzalez was completely covered in blood on one half of his face and must have been struggling impaired vision despite the relentless pace showing no signs of slowing down.

The mandatory title fight started cautiously for the first three rounds with neither fighter willing to take much of a chance. When you're an underdog like I was, and when you go the distance and you fight back and you hurt the fighter and you show what you have inside of you, this is boxing.

The former star Muay Thai fighter, who once worked as garbage man to help finance his early boxing career, continued his unbelievable victory run by handing Gonzalez the first loss of his career.

One judge had the fight even at 113-113. He is a devastating puncher in his own right with 29 of his 32 victories coming by way of knockout. We will stick with chalk and take Gonzalez to win by decision. He was the WBC super flyweight champion when he lost to Cuadras in May 2014 by technical decision.

Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, right, of Thailand, punches Roman Gonzalez, of Nicaragua, during the 11th round of a WBC super flyweight championship boxing match Saturday, March 18, 2017, in NY.
