Funeral Arrangements Announced For Dan Rooney

Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder issued the following statement on the death of Pittsburgh Steelers chairman Dan Rooney.

The son of Steelers founder Art Rooney Sr., Rooney had worked with the team since 1955, filling roles from director of personnel to president to chairman.

"Tomorrow, the flag at the Pro Football Hall of Fame will fly at half-staff in honor of one of the greatest men to ever serve this game". During his time as owner, the team won five of their six Super Bowls, including three in five years. Perhaps one of Rooney's greatest enduring legacies to the game of football is the "Rooney Rule", which mandates that teams interview at least one minority for head coaching or senior football operations vacancies.

A member of one of the NFL's founding families has died.

"Dan Rooney was a great friend of mine, but more importantly, he was a great friend to the people of Pittsburgh, a model citizen, and someone who represented the United States with dignity and grace on the world stage", Obama wrote in a statement. The Steelers announced that Mr. Rooney died Thursday, April 13, 2017.

The friendliness Rooney showed Walton when they met in Hershey and in the instances to come was mirrored by the rest of the Rooney family.

"Ambassador Rooney was one of the giants of our game", McCaskey said. "Personally, I'll always be grateful for the guidance and friendship he provided to me over the years".

He was a powerful force within the league. "I feel blessed to have known him, and our prayers and thoughts are with his wonderful family".

Rooney passed away today a the age of 84. Their level of respect for each other didn't change in 1992 when new head coach Bill Cowher informed Walton that he wouldn't retain him.

There are now eight minority coaches in the National Football League, including Steelers coach Mike Tomlin.

Later in life, he was appointed ambassador to Ireland in 2009 by President Obama, a position he held until his resignation in 2012.

Owners across the National Football League hold a united front. "His impact on the game was profound", Pro Football Hall of Fame president David Baker released in a statement.
