Barack Obama: Dan Rooney was a 'championship-caliber good man'

Dan Rooney Steelers Chairman and Football Icon Dies at 84

The Penguins will honor deceased Steelers owner Dan Rooney before and during Friday's Game 2 of their first-round playoff series against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Considered one of the most inspirational and influential executives in the NFL, Rooney was widely respected and appreciated even beyond the boundaries of football.

The Penguins' players wore special decals on their helmets that had the Steelers logo on them and read, "Dan Rooney, 1933 to 2007". Dan Rooney was a true pioneer; genuine ... humble ... one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. "He leaves a legacy on our sport that will last for generations", Giants president and CEO John Mara said in a statement. We send our deepest condolences to his wife, Patricia, and the entire Rooney family.

The Rooney family bought the Steelers in 1933 and Dan Rooney took over the team after his father's death in 1988.

"As someone who's privileged to work in the National Football League, my honest condolences go out to the Rooney family, (head coach) Mike Tomlin and everyone else at the Steelers who knew Mr. Rooney, " said Joseph, who in January because the first, African American full-time head coach in the Broncos' 57-year history.
