A POLICEMAN has been stabbed and has apparent attacker shot by officers in a major security incident at the Houses of Parliament.

Portcullis House and the Palace of Westminster - a nearby United Kingdom government building - are on lockdown.

A House of Commons official said that a suspect has been wounded by armed police on Parliament grounds. While at present it is unclear exactly what happened, a London-based journalist said shots were fired and that journalists were confined to the press gallery in the parliamentary building.

Wednesday was a busy day for Parliament, with question time for the prime minister, which means the chambers would have been full.

Mrs May was seen being ushered into a silver Jaguar vehicle as what sounded like gunfire rang out at Parliament during the incident at around 2.45pm.

House of Commons business has been suspended.

The Air Ambulance landed in to Parliament Square.

A police officer has reportedly been stabbed.

Witnesses said a loud explosion was heard, followed by the sound of gunfire.

"He had a lightweight jacket on, dark pants and a shirt".

The attacker has been shot by police, according to authorities.

"When I got inside I was wondering what the hell was going on and I saw dozens of panicked people running down the street".

"It looked like they were running for their lives". He seemed to be holding up a long kitchen knife.

Armed Police have opened fire and shot a person outside the Houses of Parliament. Sky News understands she has now left the area.

He said there were undercover officers in a 4x4 vehicle in the auto park.

London's Metropolitan Police said on Twitter they were called at approximately 2:40 pm to reports of an incident near Westminster Bridge and that it was being treated as a firearms incident.

Prime Minister Theresa May is said to have been bundled into a auto by a plain-clothes police officer and driven quickly from the scene.
