Senate confirmation hearing for Neil Gorsuch

Neither will get a chance to do so until Gorsuch's nomination hits the Senate floor, since Democratic Sen.

The nomination of Judge Gorsuch has been a genuinely collaborative and transparent process.

Jennifer Sisk, a former student of Judge Neil Gorsuch's, informed the Senate Judiciary Committee about a class discussion in which the federal judge and law professor argued that companies can and should ask women interviewing for jobs about their pregnancy plans. "Some of us have experienced it professionally on occasion", they write. She recently ran for a congressional seat in upstate NY.

Neil Gorsuch's mission is straightforward: Don't mess up.

This is a rush transcript.

Democrats have argued Gorsuch's nomination is illegitimate because the Senate GOP refused to hold a hearing previous year for Merrick Garland, whom former President Barack Obama had picked to replace Scalia.

In October, Cruz suggested that the Senate might choose to leave Scalia's seat open indefinitely if Clinton won the presidential election.

President Donald Trump's U.S. Supreme Court nominee goes before a Senate committee starting Monday as a heavy favorite, given Republican control, to win confirmation to a lifetime seat on the nation's highest court. Democratic groups are pushing senators to not confirm Gorsuch, pointing to problematic rulings and demanding that the Democrats stand in unity against the nominee. When he was first nominated, he praised Antonin Scalia. In fact, they shouldn't ask him any questions that could be answered this way.

"Our job is to determine whether Judge Gorsuch is a reasonable, mainstream conservative or is he not", said the panel's top Democrat, Dianne Feinstein.

The groups note that Gorsuch, a member of the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, has claimed to be an originalist - a legal view that interpretations of the Constitution should be fixed, based on their original intent. The student also intends to have a family with her husband. His mother, Anne Gorsuch Burford, briefly served as President Reagan's EPA administrator, where she slashed staff and eviscerated anti-pollution regulations before resigning amidst scandal. "When we see that these networks are involved in funding far-left socialist agenda in Europe, including within some of our ally countries, we want the questions answered: why USA taxpayer dollars are being hijacked and ship overseas funding causes against what American hold dear".

So there's two antitrust cases that are really important to look at.

By recognizing in both Hobby Lobby v. Sebelius and Little Sisters v. Burwell that the Affordable Care Act's mandate is oppressive to many consciences, and by showing that even a stillborn baby's rights deserve protection in Pino v. And that's a real concern: The age-old tradition in Supreme Court hearings is for nominees to do all they can to avoid saying anything of substance. He has not had the opportunity to write an opinion in a major abortion rights case. And in his 2004 dissertation, Gorsuch was really skeptical of those decisions.

Gorsuch "implied that women intentionally manipulate companies and plan to disadvantage" them, Sisk said in a letter to lawmakers last week.

AMY GOODMAN: I want to turn to Judge Gorsuch addressing the conservative Federalist Society in 2013. When asked if that's what Gorsuch may have been doing, Sisk told NPR: "It wasn't what he was doing". It surely bears its share of ironies, too. But today we have about 5,000 federal criminal statutes on the books, a lot of them added in the last few decades. There are so many crimes cowled in the numbing fine print of those pages that scholars have given up counting and are now debating their number.

"We each have lived long enough and worked long enough to know gender discrimination when we see it". I'm, for instance, a democrat. "I don't think he loses anything by subtly distancing himself from the president". And this relates to Citizens United.

Gorsuch, while nominated by Trump, has already spoken out against the President's attacks against USA judges in the wake of his overturned travel ban. Now, let me translate.

Democrats made it known this was still a sore spot for them.

Durbin criticized Gorsuch for backing the right of corporations and their owners to assert religious rights. But also, the Democrats haven't exactly made much of a fuss about him.

The most recent justice not confirmed was Merrick Garland.

He recognizes the value of judicial restraint and upholding the letter of the law over personal beliefs. We'll be back in a minute.
