Penélope Cruz to Play Donatella Versace on 'American Crime Story'

She'll need a good wig! Penelope Cruz, 42, has been cast as Donatella Versace, 61, for American Crime Story series about Gianni's 1997 murder

"Versace" follows the 1997 assassination of iconic fashion designer Gianni Versace. With the anthology series' third iteration centering on the Versace fashion empire in the wake of the 1997 Miami Beach murder of founder Gianni Versace, Cruz will play the role of younger sister Donatella Versace, who subsequently became the face of the global fashion house.

We already knew that Lady Gaga won't be playing Donatella Versace in American Crime Story Season 3, but now we know who will: Oscar victor Penelope Cruz will portray the fashion executive and designer on Ryan Murphy's series, People confirmed. Meanwhile, Darren Criss of Glee fame was already cast in the role of Andrew Cunanan, the serial killer responsible for Gianni's murder.

Previously, it had been rumored that singer Lady Gaga - who appeared in Murphy's "American Horror Story" - would be playing Donatella in the series.

This will mark Cruz's first regular television series acting gig. Her credits include "Volver", "Broken Embraces", "Nine", "To Rome With Love", "The Counselor" and "Vicky Cristina Barcelona", for which she won the supporting actress Oscar. Since marrying fellow Oscar-winning Spaniard Javier Bardem in 2010, Cruz has been flying under the radar, appearing a year ago in the ill-fated Zoolander 2.

The story is based on the book Vulgar Favors by Vanity Fair writer Maureen Orth.

A second installment of "Feud" will focus on Prince Charles and Diana.

Executive produced by FX mainstay Ryan Murphy, American Crime Story is following up its acclaimed debut season The People v. O. J. Simpson with a varied slew of true crime stories. It ignited the careers of some of its actors, including Sterling K. Brown, and reinforced the positions of accomplished actors like Sarah Paulson and Cuba Gooding Jr.
