IRS: Tax deadline nears for many farmers and fishermen

As of February 24, the Internal Revenue Service has sent out $127 billion in tax refunds, 10 percent less than the $142 billion paid at the same time past year, according to newly released IRS data.

Wednesday, Comptroller Peter Franchot urged any Marylander who has yet to file their 2013 tax returns to do so as soon as possible and collect their refund money.

"We're trying to connect a million people with their share of 1 billion dollars in unclaimed refunds for the 2013 tax year", said IRS Commissioner John Koskinen.

The point is that while you may not have had to file a tax return in 2013 (and other years for that matter), not doing so could mean you're literally turning down money - sometimes lots of it - for something that probably won't take up too much of your time. The law requires taxpayers to properly address mail and postmark the tax return by that date. For 2013 tax returns, the window closes April 18, 2017.

As many 18,000 Alabamians are owed refunds from the 2013 tax year, the IRS said. The 2013 refund can be held, however, if filers have not submitted returns for 2014 and 2015. The funds will also be applied to any amounts you owe to the IRS or state tax agencies, as well, and could be used to offset unpaid child support or overdue federal debts, including student loans. These refunds exclude the Earned Income Tax Credit and other credits.
