Future Star Wars films to focus on new characters, not legacy heroes

Rogue One Writer Reveals Film's Happier Alternate Ending

In the original script for "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story", several key protagonists - including Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor - survived the final battle and made it out safely, the movie's creators tell Entertainment Weekly.

"If there's ever a time where I have to put that thing on (I thought), 'Oh God, no, here it comes.' It's so very bad", says Tudyk, who was not that impressed by the "really rudimentary" piece of poster board that stood in for Kaytoo's face.

Three months after it was released in theaters, it's fair to say the ending of Rogue One is no longer a spoiler: Everyone in the Rogue One team dies in the process of getting the Death Star plans. "So for this first draft, let's try to do the best version we think of with Jyn and Cassian surviving". "The transfer of the plans happened later". In this ending, he's just as tenacious, but Jyn and Cassian escape in pods before their ship is destroyed by Lord Vader. "The pod looked like just another piece of debris", Whitta said. Bodhi Rook, Chirrut Imwe, or Baze Malbus did not exist.

Movies go though a lot of changes, but any changes made to a "Star Wars" movie are always fun to delve into, and "Rogue One" has a lot of them. "We decided they should die on the surface (of Scarif), and that was the way it ended".

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be on digital HD March 24 and Blu-ray and DVD, April 4.

But the writers didn't initially explore the idea since they feared Disney would find it too dark for the brand. Imagining this careful getaway, with the two heroes floating away with the rest of the garbage, one can't help but think of Han and Leia's escape in the Falcon from The Empire Strikes Back, where they land the ship on a Star Destroyer to avoid scanner detection.

"We always felt that it was the right thing to do, that these characters make the ultimate sacrifice". Personally, I'm still holding out hope that there was at least a discussion to have Darth Vader cut down the Rogue One heroes in the same manner that he did the nameless Rebel Soldiers at the tail end of the movie, but that day may never come. "The ship-to-ship data transfer happened off Scarif", he said.

"The fact that we had to jump through so many hoops to keep them alive was the writing gods telling us that if they were meant to live it wouldn't be this hard", Whitta told EW.

"I never believed that they would let us kill off all the characters in the film".
