For the first day of spring, free and frozen are in the forecast.

There may be snow on the ground, but that's not stopping one tasty spring tradition from happening.

It's hard to imagine that today is the first day of Spring.

In addition, Dairy Queen is giving away a free vanilla cone to each visitor on Monday, March 20.

The aim, officials said, is two-fold - to make you smile, and to raise funding for Children's Miracle Network hospitals.

Lines formed outside many locations as customers waited patiently for ices in flavors such as passionfruit and peanut butter and jelly. "It's expected that more than 500,000 pounds of free Italian Ice will be given out as part of the beloved annual celebration, which is heavier than the weight of the Statue of Liberty".

Rita's Italian Ice opened its doors in Bensalem in 1984 and has been dedicated to spreading "Ice, Custard and Happiness" ever since.

This year the first day of spring arrives the earliest since the late 19th century.

Today is the day to get your free sugar fix.

Also Monday, take time to enter the #RitasFirstDayOfSpring contest.
