California Highway Patrol officers are investigating a fatal crash in which a stolen vehicle crashed into a large crane, the department said.

The crash happened at 6:04 a.m. while the driver was traveling northbound on Sacramento Valley Boulevard north of Maddock Road, the news release said.

The shooting continues a pattern of recent gunfire on freeways in the San Francisco Bay Area, though there's no clear connection between the incidents.

There have been 80 shootings on Bay Area freeways in the past 16 months, the majority of them in the East Bay. The sedan driver was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, the CHP said.
