Comey Confirms FBI Probe of Russia Allegations, Refutes Wiretapping Claims

The top two lawmakers on the committee said Sunday that documents the Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation delivered late last week offered no evidence that the Obama administration had wiretapped Trump Tower, the president's New York City headquarters.

Mr Trump took to Twitter before the hearing began, accusing Democrats of making up allegations about his campaign associates' contact with Russian Federation during the election.

"I have no confirmation that supports those tweets, and we have looked carefully inside the FBI", Comey said.

Under questioning from the committee's top Democrat, Rep. Adam Schiff, he also publicly contradicted a series of tweets from Trump that declared the Republican candidate's phones had been ordered tapped by President Barack Obama during the campaign.

Comey was testifying before the House intelligence committee.

On Friday, the Department of Justice said it turned over information sought by congressional committees, which requested documents for any potential court orders or warrants related to Trump, his campaign surrogates, family or friends.

Both Mr Comey and Mr Rogers said they have no evidence or intelligence that Russian cyber actors changed vote tallies in key states during last year's poll.

"The Russians have a long history of interfering in elections, theirs and other people's", Clapper continued. Rogers replied by saying votes were not changed in any of them.

In a Monday morning tweet, Trump blamed Democrats for the investigation into his contacts and said the House intelligence committee should be focus on investigating leaks.

Rogers said that his agency is working to provide Congress the material it needs to investigate the intelligence agencies' findings.

Later, Mr Comey said that while it is not FBI practice to confirm the existence of ongoing investigations involving classified matters.

Mr Comey said the probe is part of the FBI's counter-intelligence mission.

He said the investigation includes the nature of any links between individuals associated with Mr Trump's campaign and the Russian government, and whether there was any co-ordination between Russian efforts and the campaign. He said he can not provide details about the investigation.

Director James Comey just confirmed for the first time during a House intelligence committee hearing on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election that the FBI, the same FBI that publicly commented on an investigation that gave the appearance of problems for Hillary Clinton days before an election, is investigating Russia's interference in the 2016 election, as well as possible coordination (read collusion) between the Trump campaign and Russia.
