Saunders leads as Johnson lurks at Riviera Country Club

The Many Faces of Clippers Owner Steve Ballmer

Harrington has been hampered by a shoulder problem in recent weeks, but looked in fine fettle as he carded five birdies and a lone bogey to reach four under par at Riviera Country Club.

The three-time major victor has shot a four under-par opening round 67 in California.

It left the Dubliner three shots of the lead held by Sam Saunders (64).

Most of the afternoon wave was unable to complete their rounds due to a fog delay to start the morning.

He then treaded water until the par-five 17th, where a stellar approach settled two feet from the flag and Scott tapped in for another birdie.

Day was among 48 players still on the course when darkness fell and was even through 16 after four birdies and four bogeys.

The Australian world No.7 sits at two-under-par in a share of eighth place after his opening nine holes, playing in the morning marquee group with England's 2016 Olympic gold medal victor Justin Rose and world No.3 Dustin Johnson. The most immediate challenges will come from the four players who are now tied for second at five under (Dustin Johnson, JT Poston, Daniel Summerhays, and Brett Stegmaier) who have all completed Round One as well.

Last year's Perth International victor Louis Oosthuizen opened with a three-under-par 69 to sit in a tie for 24th but world number 11 Alex Noren could only manage a two-over 74.

The Australian shot a bogey-free three-under 68.

The trip were joined late in the day by Australia's Cameron Percy and Brett Stegmaier, after the American birdied five of his opening seven holes.

Notables Branden Grace, Kevin Na and Byeong Hun An also shot 4-under 67s.
