Nicole Kidman and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II Join 'Aquaman'

We don't know much about the movie version of Black Manta, but he's pretty much always depicted as the archenemy of Aquaman (played by Jason Momoa in the film), and he's often the leader of an evil underwater militia of some sort. Another features an Oscar-winning actor in what may be a brief but important role.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is known for Netflix's The Get Down and is featured in Dwayne Johnson's Baywatch. DC has just announced that the company has cast The Get Down's Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as another major villain, Black Manta.

Nicole Kidman is reportedly being lined up for the role of Atlanna, the mother of DC's Aquaman.

As for the rest of the cast, some of which will appear in Justice League: Amber Heard is playing Aquaman's royal love interest Mera, Willem Dafoe will portray Aquaman's advisor, scientist Dr. Vulko and Patrick Wilson is playing Orm, the villain half-brother of the title character. I'm betting her role in the film is probably smaller, dedicated to the origin story of this tale.

In the comics, Black Manta is Aquaman's main enemy similar to how Joker is to Batman and Lex Luthor is to Superman. This led to a hatred of the hero and the sea, which the boy meant to master; this is just one of a few origin stories applied to the character over the years. In retaliation for his father's death, Aquaman hunts down Black Manta and accidentally kills his father. His trademark suit, however, allows him to swim across the deeps of the ocean and to fight Aquaman on his home turf.
