Congress demands EC probe into Irom Sharmila's bribe allegations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit poll-bound Manipur on February 25 to address an election rally at the historic Kangla Fort in Imphal, said BJP MP and Manipur in-charge Prahlad Singh Patel here on Wednesday.

State BJP president K Bhabananda Singh, however, said: "The Congress was facing tough anti-incumbency after ruling for the last 15 years and they know they would lose the (assembly) polls".

He claimed that Congress will win at least 10 out of the 20 ST reserved seats in hill districts and his party will get 50% of the Naga voters in Naga dominated districts.

Congress today lodged a complaint with the Election Commission against BJP for allegedly offering to finance the poll campaign of Independent candidate Irom Sharmila in Manipur and demanded a thorough probe and strict action including criminal prosecution.

The two-phased assembly elections are slated to be held on March 4 and 8 respectively. She launched People's Resurgence and Justice Alliance in October last and said she will fight elections from Thoubal as well as Khurai, from where she hails. PRJA is hoping to make an impact using alternative political practices.

Mittal said the Commission has recently made several recommendations to the government for electoral reforms, one being the contribution of Rs 2,000 and above to political parties to render account to eschew corruption in the electoral process. After she broke her fast, Irom declared that she wants to become the Chief Minister so that she could press for repeal of the contentious AFSPA.

In the last Assembly polls, the Congress had won 42 seats and Okram Ibobi Singh was re-elected as the chief minister.
