Gary teen in Amber Alert now charged in mother's death

A Gary teen that was at the center of an Amber Alert earlier this week is now charged in connection with the death of her mother.

Cops feared that Chastinea had been kidnapped and mounted a huge search for her until she was found safe on Tuesday afternoon.

Reeves had shown up at a neighbor's house with her 4-year-old sister.

The girl is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her mother, 34-year old Jamie Garnett, police said. The relative later claimed that the teen was "hysterical".

Reeves first went missing at about 2 a.m. Monday, police said, and was last seen in the area of 2027 Maine St. Reeves went to that address to seek assistance after her mother was the victim of a crime police reported. "She run out the back door when the police come". Reeves made her first appearance in juvenile court Thursday, Carter added.

Prosecutors are now seeking a waiver to have Reeves tried as an adult.

Police did not release any details of a motive or any further information about the investigation.

She is now being detained at the Gary juvenile center.

"I remember (Garnett) taking her children to school in the mornings and coming home from work", he told CBS.
