Charges against ex-CBI chief should be thoroughly probed: Naidu

AP Singh and Moin Qureshi

The FIR says "The data record including BBM messages contain various nefarious transactions indicating therein that Moin Qureshi has been liasoning and obtaining illegal money from various public persons for getting their work done through public servants".

Former CBI director AP Singh has reacted to a corruption case filed against him by the investigation agency.

"In the first time in history, a CBI director has been brought to book", he said.

Officials said the CBI has based its FIR on the complaint forwarded by ED Director Karnal Singh. As per BBM messages collected from Koneru's mobile, it has been revealed that Qureshi was holding conversations with AP Singh on behalf of Koneru regarding bail and discharge matters of Koneru's father and brother Madhu Koneru.

The ED also decoded Blackberry chat messages exchanged between Singh and Qureshi to claim that cognisable offences were committed by the duo.

Among the messages listed by ED is one from October 3, 2012 in which Qureshi writes to Singh: "Sir, the petition I gave you last nite (sic) please help...ex-Chairman Bank of India who is known to our family for 30 years". The investigating agency also reportedly conducted raids in Delhi, Ghaziabad, Hyderabad and Chennai in connection with the case.

The four accused persons have been booked under various sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code.

Moin Akhtar Qureshi, who is also under probe by the Income Tax department and the Enforcement Directorate, is accused of operating as a middleman for several public servants including AP Singh.

Two months after AG's remark, Singh quit as a member of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), an appointment he was given by the UPA government in 2013 after his CBI stint ended. Qureshi, according to IT, had evaded taxes to the tune of Rs 157 crore.

Qureshi's name also figured in the names of visitors who frequently met Ranjit Sinha at his residence and a CBI probe is underway in this case.

The Central Bureau of Investigation on Monday registered an FIR naming its former director A P Singh.
