All-America linebacker Jabrill Peppers sat out of the Orange Bowl with a leg injury. When the bowl lines were first released, MI was a 6-point favorite and the total was 56.5, so both the side and the over/under have moved significantly over the past few weeks. The Seminoles also improved to 6-0 at Hard Rock Stadium under Fisher.

Florida State rallied with the help of a 66-yard kickoff return by freshman Keith Gavin. He led the team with 15 tackles, and had 3.5 tackles for loss as well.

Football Study Hall ranks MI as a top 10 run defense in several metrics, including Rushing S&P-plus, Success Rate and Opportunity Rate (31.7 percent).

Michigan's offense lacked even those infrequent breakthroughs and settled for three field goals, including one when Murray's muffed punt gave the Wolverines the ball at the Florida State one-yard line. After a long kick return set the Seminoles up with a short field, Cook wiggled free from the backfield for a 21-yard reception to start the drive.

U-M's suddenly stingy defense made a stunning play as linebacker Mike McCray picked off Florida State quarterback Deondre Francois at the 14-yard line and ran it back for a touchdown. Instead of letting it go in the end zone, he attempted to field it. Murray took advantage of busted MI coverage and ran wide-open downfield, hauling in a pass from Francois and running 92 yards for a Seminoles touchdown to go up 17-3.

"It's not meaningless", Fisher said of the non-playoff bowls during a news conference Thursday. "Big players make big plays in big-time moments, and that was a big-time moment right there".

Florida State opened the scoring on a 2-yard Cook touchdown run with 12:47 left in the first quarter.

MI coach Jim Harbaugh hired Brown from Boston College, where he had led the Eagles to the nation's top-rated defense.

On a night where Florida State went up against a veteran-laden, top-notch defense in MI, the Seminoles' defense flipped the script and outperformed the Wolverines' elite defense. He was taken into the locker room and later declared out for the game. Michigan's offense amassed a paltry 83 yards by the end of the half.

"He wasn't able to run", Harbaugh said. In Florida State's final nine games, though, Cook toted the ball 218 times (24.2 per game) for 1,392 yards (154.7 per game) and 16 touchdowns. He's the Seminoles' career leader with 4,464 yards rushing and 46 rushing touchdowns, and has 935 yards receiving.

The Seminoles picked up four sacks in the game, and pass the 50 sack mark for the season with 51.

"But we kept fighting. and things turned our way". They got 145 yards rushing from Dalvin Cook and recovered after wasting a 12-point lead midway through the fourth.

Senior defensive end DeMarcus Walker led the tackle-for-loss-charge in his final game as a Seminole.

"I actually didn't think I did step out", Cook joked. After the teams traded field goals, Nyqwan Murray caught a 92-yard touchdown pass from Francois, an Orange Bowl record. Francois completed only 9 of 27 passes but made the majority, throwing for 222 yards and connecting with Murray for two scores.

Heisman Trophy finalist Jabrill Peppers didn't play for MI against Florida State, and might not be in a maize-and-blue uniform again.
