Families Can Soon Use Food Stamps for Online Groceries

Amazon, FreshDirect and other online grocers will begin accepting food stamps as part of a pilot program conducted in partnership with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. "With supermarkets disappearing from neighborhoods in all five boroughs, this pilot program will only accelerate the trend", asserted New York Association of Grocery Stores spokesman Brad Gerstman.

Food stamps are such a political football, people will say disgusting things in public to those who need them.

City and state officials say the pilot program will help fight hunger and promote healthier food choices. "Enabling SNAP participants to shop online and have their groceries delivered makes fresh foods more accessible to everyone, including those who may not be able to make a weekly trip to the store".

Those chosen include Amazon in Maryland, New Jersey and New York; FreshDirect in New York; Safeway in Maryland, Oregon and Washington; ShopRite in Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania; Hy-Vee in Iowa; Rochester-based Hart's Local Grocers in New York; and Buffalo-based Dash's Market in New York.

"Amazon is excited to participate in the USDA SNAP Online Purchasing Pilot". "As with the core program, SNAP participants will only be able to use their benefits to purchase eligible items online - not to pay for service or delivery charges".

Brick-and-mortar chains such as Wal-Mart are aggressively expanding into the online grocery space and also offering both delivery as well as pick-up service at certain locations. "With the SNAP Pilot, we look forward to bringing the online purchasing option to SNAP clients and positively impacting all the communities that we serve". Later that year in July, Diaz participated in a conference on Capitol Hill to address the need for technological advancements for SNAP benefit users with Ohio Rep, which eventually led to sending a letter to USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack, urging his department to select New York State for this pilot program. USDA said as the pilot progresses and confirms its system is operating as required, it expects to add additional retailers, with a goal of having a national option for SNAP participants.
