Dozens Injured In LIRR Train Accident

More than 100 people were injured when a Long Island Rail Road train derailed at the busy Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn on Wednesday morning (Jan. 4), according to NBC New York.

A NY commuter train derailed in Brooklyn on Wednesday morning, authorities said.

The train from Far Rockaway was arriving at the Brooklyn transit hub around 8:20 a.m. when it slammed into the block at the end of the track - reminiscent of September's fatal Hoboken station crash.

Lisa Jackson said, "Next thing I know, I hit my head and my back and I can't remember anything else". "Everyone in the train just went flying".

October 5, 2016: A CSX freight train derailed in the Bronx, disrupting Amtrak service.

Cuomo, who has made infrastructure improvements a centerpiece of his agenda, said Wednesday's incident was minor in comparison.

The Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) said the derailment caused traffic and travel delays near the station, which is also a stop for city subway lines.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said that thetrain struck the bumping block and came to an abrup halt. Sources told Eyewitness News that preliminary information is that the train was going too fast as it entered the station. "It was a train that didn't stop when it was supposed to [and] hit the block at a fairly low rate of speed".

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Railroad Administration are involved in the investigation.

Investigators have been sent to the scene of the city's second major rail accident in five months.

After a Long Island Rail Road train began shaking mildly, then more violently at New Hyde Park, it derailed in October 2016, leaving 29 people injured.
