What will happen next after Lewis Hamilton defied Mercedes team orders?

No driver has previously won 10 races in a season and failed to take the title.

"I am very proud to have done the same feat as my dad achieved, he is going to be coming in half an hour I think", said Rosberg, whose father was not at the circuit and has been present for only his home Monaco Grand Prix this year. "I don't think I'm going to be available for a few days".

Graham Hill (1962, 1968) and Damon Hill (1996) are the only other father and son to have won the title, with Rosberg saying his father had always given support.

"I wasn't expecting it", Rosberg said. "Let me sleep overnight and come up with a solution". "So I'm very thankful for that".

Though Rosberg ended up second in the race this year after Lewis Hamilton, he bagged home nine out of the 21 races that gave him 5 advantage points over Hamilton.

Rosberg closed out the 2016 Drivers' Championship with 385 points, with Hamilton in second with 380 points and Ricciardo third with 256 points.

"It's unbelievably special to beat him because the level's so high", Rosberg said.

"And I took the World Championship away from him which is a phenomenal feeling".

After a series of pit stops and mid-field scraps Hamilton was left in control by lap 34 ahead of Rosberg by 1.3 seconds with Verstappen third and Vettel, setting fastest laps, climbing back to fifth to launch himself in pursuit of the two Red Bulls.

As a result, Hamilton slowed down to ensure Rosberg, safely sitting in second, was pushed back to the chasing pack and forced to defend his podium position.

When his team told him over race radio to up the tempo, Hamilton replied bluntly: "I suggest you guys let us race".

"Those last couple of laps, with those two behind and knowing if I dropped behind them it was over - not enjoyable".

"But we have won the constructors' championship already".

Hamilton twice ignored team instructions to pick up the pace, firstly from his race engineer and then from Mercedes technical chief Paddy Lowe, as he backed up the field to try and push Rosberg within reach of Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari.

Still, aside from Singapore, where Rosberg crushed Hamilton in qualifying with a quite stunning lap, he has not been as quick.

"The battle out there with Max was unreal". "Max went full on aggressive".

"Congrats to Lewis, you are a great competitor", Rosberg said.

Horner said he "would not have expected him to anything different".

As Hamilton struggled with engine problems early on, Rosberg looked in command as he opened up a lead of 43 points.

Briton Jenson Button, the 2009 champion, and Brazilian Felipe Massa made emotional exits after competing in their final races of long and successful careers.
