Syria: 45 killed as Syrian forces shell Aleppo, claim rebels

Syria's Aleppo City Council President Brita Hagi Hassan made an impassioned plea Wednesday to establish a humanitarian corridor so that embattled civilians in the city are able to escape the fighting.

De Mistura renewed his call for the members of the jihadist group formerly known as the Nusra Front to leave the besieged zone, which he said would help save lives and strengthen the argument for a ceasefire.

At least 26 were killed Wednesday due to Syrian fire on the Jubb al-Qubbeh district, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, and more than 300 have been killed in east Aleppo since the latest government assault started on November 15.

"All men below 40 years of age are being arrested", he said, citing "score settling" and executions of captured militants.

France has called for an urgent U.N. Security Council meeting later Wednesday to try to stop the fighting and bring in humanitarian aid.

The U.N. condemned the "descent into hell" being endured by civilians in Aleppo.

If the regime takes all of Aleppo - the last urban rebel stronghold in Syria - it would mark a turning point in the war, putting Assad's government back in control of all four major cities, making a political opposition less likely. He told Reuters that Syria's brutal civil war, which has raged for nearly six years, would not be resolved with one of the "biggest massacres on a civilian population since World War Two".

The U.N. envoy for Syria says the United Nations and its humanitarian aid partners are strengthening their presence in government-controlled western Aleppo, hoping to "make a difference" in the city's besieged, rebel-held east.

Abdulkafi Alhamdo, a teacher living in the Zabadieh neighborhood in eastern Aleppo, said refugees were filling up his building, most of its flats abandoned because of the war. "Currently, surgeries are carried on limbs without any anesthesia" because they are saving them for injuries near the heart and abdomen, he said.

Russia's foreign ministry spokeswoman has mocked the Syrian Civil Defense for posting a Mannequin Challenge video - a viral Internet meme in which participants remain frozen as mannequins while the video is recorded - and accused them of staging scenes of destruction in the rebel-held neighborhoods of Aleppo.

The UN had hoped Russian Federation and Syria would allow a pause in fighting to gain access to the east, he said, adding that 400 people there were in desperate need of medical evacuation.

The conflict has played out tragically in the divided city of Aleppo, where tens of thousands, mostly women and children, have been displaced from their homes in rebel areas since Saturday.

A hospital able to serve up to 250 patients a day will be sent to the Aleppo region on Wednesday morning, reports in Russian Federation said.

The Syrian Civil Defense search-and-rescue group put the toll at 45 dead.
