NY Gov. Cuomo: Uber expansion would be good for upstate

The awards ranged from over $80 million for the Rochester-Finger Lakes Region, Capital Region, Mohawk Valley, New York City and the Mid-Hudson Valley to over $60 million each for Western New York, the Southern Tier, Central New York, the North Country and Long Island. Regions of the state compete to win millions of dollars in economic development funds.

Last year, the Finger Lakes region won a special $500 million award through the Upstate Revitalization Initiative. This year, a $717 million pot was divvied up.

He said NY state now must stand up against a "tide of negativity" and confront discrimination and intolerance. The state held its annual Regional Economic Development Councils awards ceremony - sometimes called the state's economic development Hunger Games - this afternoon.

The $25 million top prizes came on top of various project-specific grants and awards the state unveiled Thursday, resulting in the total, final award.

$2 million for facility upgrades at the state University at Albany's Bioscience Development Corp.'s Cancer Research Center, George Education Building and Main Laboratory Building in Rensselaer County.

A broad coalition of legal advocates, clergy and local leaders is urging New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo to sign legislation aimed at ensuring the poor have access to public defenders.
