McKnight's Jets teammates remember him fondly

After his junior year, McKnight left USC and was drafted into the NFL. A shot to the chest entered McKnight's liver.

Normand didn't go into details from the investigation, saying he didn't want to taint any prospective witnesses that might still come forward. He was in the driver's seat of a blue Infinity G37 at the time and shot through his open passenger window, two of which hit McKnight, who had already gotten out of his Audi Q7. The man also called a number on the side of truck to report if the truck was being driven unsafely. McKnight got out of his vehicle and Gasser began to argue with him. He was drafted in the fourth round by the Jets and spent three seasons in NY, piling up 505 rushing yards and averaging 28.7 yards on kickoff returns.

According to, an unnamed witness described seeing Gasser shoot McKnight at Behrman Highway and Holmes Boulevard in Terrytown, LA, just outside New Orleans. The apparent road rage incident started on the Crescent City Connection, heading towards Jefferson Parish.

The coach recruited McKnight out of Louisiana when he was one of the nation's top high-school players.

"Help me understand this shit", New York Giants player Damon Harrison wrote on Twitter.

Even though McKnight joined the Riders late in the season, Reynolds said he quickly formed tight bonds with other players.

Though Grimble met McKnight on a visit to their shared alma mater, he said he'll remember him by the stories he told in the summers.

In a freakish aside, Normand then went on to say that "the gentleman that raised Joe McKnight Jr. used to work for this office" as a deputy. Witnesses reported the two had been in a heated argument, the sheriff said. No charges have been filed, with Normand saying the state has certain "statutes" that provide a defense to certain crimes, but he did not go into further detail.

Carroll recalled that at USC, McKnight struck up a bond with Jake Olson, a longtime USC fan who lost his eyesight due to cancer in 2009 - often visiting practices as a kid - and this season joined the program as a reserve long snapper.

Gasser stayed at the scene after the shooting, and was then taken into custody, the sheriff's office said.

Normand said they know of no video of the incident.

Police took 54-year-old Ronald Gasser into custody after the incident, but later released him after questioning, having not yet laid any charges.

NAACP leaders and community activists are calling for answers from local law enforcement after the release of suspect Ronald Gasser. Additionally, the sheriff's department told TMZ that, while they are sure Gasser shot and killed McKnight, they have "questions about the circumstances surrounding what led up to it". The shooting happened about 3 p.m. Thursday in the New Orleans suburb of Terrytown.

The Jefferson Parish District Attorney declined to comment.

Gasser has not been charged, but the investigation is ongoing.
