China-Pak-Russia talks discuss 'deteriorating' Afghanistan security

Afghan government officials have reacted to a trilateral meeting in Moscow involving Pakistan, China and Russian Federation to discuss Afghanistan, expressing concern over the absence of Afghan officials in the summit. FO spokesman Nafees Zakria told a media briefing that peace and stability in Afghanistan is in the interest of Pakistan and the entire region.

Pakistan's Foreign Ministry said in a joint press release said that the three countries expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in Afghanistan and the increased activities of extremist groups including local affiliates of the Islamic State. ISIL is another acronym for IS.

Russian special envoy for Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov in reported comments has said the consultations on Afghanistan will lay "grounds to establish a wider regional partnership on the issue". The group previously suggested it might include Iran in future talks.

Ahmad Shekib Mostaghni, foreign affairs ministry spokesperson, said the Afghan government is not optimistic regarding the outcome of the meeting in the Russian capital.

She said the three countries agreed on a "flexible approach to remove certain figures from sanctions lists as part of efforts to foster a peaceful dialogue between Kabul and the Taliban movement".

The Afghan government has recently sent a formal request to the United Nations sanctions committee seeking delisting of members of the Hizb-e-Islami group, with which Kabul signed a peace deal. "We have serious concerns about the initiative as Afghanistan was not consulted", Mustaghni said.

Russia, China, and Pakistan meet in Moscow to discuss "growing ISIL threat" in Afghanistan - the third in a series. The deteriorating Afghan security situation is encouraging IS fighters to look at the country for refuge, he added.

The diplomats claimed contacts with the Taliban were only for the security of the Russian diplomatic mission in Afghanistan.
