PM Modi congratulates Fadnavis, BJP workers

The counting of votes and results were announced on Monday. In the first phase, voting for the 3,706 seats spread over 147 municipal councils and 17 Nagar Panchayats was held on Sunday.

Trends and results pouring in from around the state showed the BJP making inroads into the Congress and NCP strongholds. Modi also congratulated the party workers, along with state unit president Rao Saheb Danve and Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for the impressive performance of the party. However, for Shirala Nagar Panchayat in Sangli district, not a single nomination was received. "Around 70 per cent voting was reported for the polls today", State Election Commissioner, J S Saharia said.

In Osmanabad district, the police registered an offence under section 307 (attempt to murder) of IPC against 27 people, after two policemen were injured in stone pelting near a police station during polling for the Murum municipal council. It seems they are far ahead than the Opposition parties - Congress and NCP that are contesting on their own except at few places. Polling was also held for municipal council president post in 147 places for which 1,013 candidates are in the race.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed BJP's victory as a "win for pro-poor and development politics" and thanked people of the state for placing their faith in the party.

I laud BJP Karyakartas, CM @Dev_Fadnavis & @raosahebdanve.

"The direct election has created this situation in several towns where one party has won the council but the council president belongs to the rival party".

In spite of the opposition's claim that the ruling party would lose big in the elections - because of the hardships thrust on people by demonetisation, the BJP has retained public favour.

Prior to elections, a majority of municipal councils were controlled by the Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). The faction breaking out from NCP leader and former PWD minister Jaydatta Kshirsagar won 19 seats, equal to that of the closest rival.
