Man charged in shooting death of teen inside fire station

In addition to the criminal homicide charges, state police say George Matis Jr, of Republic, Pennsylvania, is facing a reckless endangerment charge. ABC News reported that Redstone Township is located "about 45 miles south of Pittsburgh". State police say they received a report around 4pm of a shooting inside the Redstone Township firehouse, where firefighters had been getting ready for the parade.

Police said the 16-year-old, whose name has not been released, was struck in the face by the bullet and died at the scene.

Matis allegedly took a pistol from his holster and shot it at the teen, hitting the victim with a bullet "in his left cheek".

A litany of other fire stations and locals offered their condolences on the fire station's Facebook page.

A Pennsylvania man was charged Sunday in connection with the shooting death of a 16-year-old junior firefighter inside a fire station.

Laci Savochka, a classmate of the victim, said the community needs to stay strong to get through the tragedy.

"We are saddened to hear of the loss of one of our students", Brownsville School District Superintendent Philip Savini said in a statement, adding that counseling sessions would be available for students and faculty members once classes resume on Tuesday.
