Hillary Clinton quotes Scripture in her concession speech

On Wednesday, Democratic presidential nominee and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton offered her concession speech after losing the U.S. presidential election to Donald Trump in "the biggest upset in modern political history".

"We have seen that our nation is more deeply divided than we thought".

"To all of us, and to the young people in particular, I hope you will hear this - I have, as Tim [Kaine] said, I have spent my entire life fighting for what I believe in". We owe him an open mind and a chance to lead. I've had successes, and I've had setbacks... sometimes really painful ones. Clinton reminded those who may be tempted to face this moment with cynicism that it's in the interest of America to keep an open mind about Trump's presidency.

Clinton was supposed to claim her spot in the White House as the first female president in the history of the United States at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City, but that event did not transpire. She reminded all little girls that her defeat doesn't change their worth, and shouldn't affect their ambitions.

To huge applause, she added: "This loss hurts, but please never stop believing that fighting for what is right is worth it".

The Republicans sincerely felt that the country made an unwise choice in 2012, rejecting a good and decent and competent man. There will be months, and perhaps years, for her to wrestle with the demons and the flaws that ultimately prevented her from obtaining her highest aspiration.

A more depressing reading of Clinton's choice is that in the Victorian era, purple was the colour of mourning.

She was a flawed candidate, one of the few national Democrats who could have lost to Trump. There is nothing near as bad on Trump as what Hillary and Bill have done, and now their daughter.

For those who supported her grudgingly or enthusiastically, for decades or for a matter of months, her closing words should ring true.

"To Barack and Michelle Obama - our country owes you an enormous debt of gratitude", she said. The condition in which we will come out on the other side, I'm not sure, but we'll make it.
