Team Canada wins World Cup of Hockey

The game was not exciting until the last few minutes, but that was completely by design. Rate them as another incredbile chapter on the ice here in the Great White North. He won 2014 Olympic gold in Sochi, the 2015 worlds, a Stanley Cup with his Pittsburgh Penguins last spring and now a World Cup of Hockey championship. As for the host nation, this wasn't the epochal 1972 Canada-Soviets Summit Series or the '76 or '87 Canada Cups. Even then, most would still put money on Canada winning.

Europe was on a power play, Roman Josi had hit the goalpost a scant minute before and Carey Price then stoned Marian Hossa from in front.

Canada had a man advantage again early in the third period, but only got one shot on Halak, a Slovak and Islanders standout, on the possibly pivotal power play. The Europeans were the better team, but it was Canada who struck for a pair of goals and 2-0 lead.

Canada was back on its heels just over a minute later with Doughty whistled for high-sticking. We'll see how that affects us going forward.

"I'm not going to try to convince anybody", Crosby said.

When Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand were put on Canada's first line with Sidney Crosby, it stood to reason that they might end up putting up a lot of points in the World Cup of Hockey. The Habs goaltender finished his tournament with four wins in as many games, a 0.954 save percentage, and a 1.50 goals against average.

"Just insane the way everything worked out", Canada captain and tournament MVP Sidney Crosby said. Kopitar did start Game 2 matched up with Crosby, Marchand and Bergeron. "We can't control what they do totally, (but) we can control what we do".

"It's pretty special", Crosby said. "I don't have to look too far back, a year or so". I think I appreciate this a lot.

Unlike the last two times when Canada trailed briefly, to the US and Russian Federation, it could not come back quickly against Europe. "But it's an unbelievable atmosphere to play here at home, to be a hockey player playing for Team Canada and be with this group of guys has been a lot of fun".

As Frans Nielsen said, "we always thought we had a good team in here, but everyone kept laughing at us and we didn't know why". Bergeron scored on the power play. It can be a matter of inches. Krueger for his brilliant tactics, Kopitar for his ability to do just about everything out there (late penalty being the exception) and Halak for being the busiest and the second-most consistent goalie in the tournament. It was the fourth goal of the tournament for the 32-year-old.

When Canada started training camp, Marchand was with Crosby and Bergeron and the trio stuck together throughout the tournament.

"I think the whole thing has been a bit of a whirlwind", Marchand said. "You win the game but you know we didn't play well. It's the biggest stage in the world right now and to be part of it is an incredible honor".

If still the best team by a good margin, this group never really seemed to reach a full-out sprint, perhaps a result of the tournament's uncomfortable September start time. That tied the game with 2 minutes and 53 seconds to go.

Europe was outshot in this one, 34-33. It did nearly everything it could and still lost. "We had some good chances to take a two-goal lead and couldn't do it".

Ralph Krueger's first run as an National Hockey League head coach lasted just 48 games with the Edmonton Oilers in the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season.

"I'm really proud of this team".

Thursday's game was highlighted by contributions from Bruins players across the ice, as Team Europe's lone goal came off the stick of Boston defenseman Zdeno Chara with 6:26 eclipsed into the first period.
