Register to vote: Deadline is Tuesday

Friday, Oct. 14, is the last day to apply for voter registration in order to be eligible to vote in the November 8, 2016, General Election.

"If you know how you want to vote, grab that mail ballot when you get it, vote it and send it back in right away", said Registrar Michael Vu. You can sign up in person at your county Board of Elections or at certain state agencies such as the Department of Health.

Indiana's registration deadline to vote in the November election is Tuesday.

This year, some voter registration deadlines have changed due to unavoidable circumstances. The deadline to register for the general election is Tuesday.

And Florida isn't the only state to change deadlines; South Carolina's deadline is October 11, but it was originally scheduled for 30 days before the election.

To prevent voter fraud, first-time voters must either register to vote in person or get their ballot in person, so that they can provide an election official with identification. Keep in mind, once you cast an absentee vote, you can not change it.

Voters must be registered in their county by this Saturday, October 15. "Of course, during any Presidential Election there is always a higher interest in voting and many voters tend to only vote in the Presidential Elections". That number will be added to the 134,280 people who are now registered to vote in Smith County.

You can apply in person at your county clerk's office, any BMV License branch or public assistance office. SB450 allows 18 counties to set up vote centers where people can drop off ballots they've received by mail in the 10 days leading up to the 2018 election.
