Fitzpatrick to remain Jets starting NFL QB

New York Jets head coach Todd Bowles watches from the sidelines during the second half of an NFL football game against the Arizona Cardinals, Monday, Oct. 17, 2016, in Glendale, Ariz. "They told me I'd have arthritis later on in life, and he was just being honest with me". That's Football 101. But in the Cardinals' case, Johnson provided the ideal complement to Arizona's intermediate passing game. "We're not putting up points". Commenting on Bowles' decision to stick with Fitzpatrick, Smith said, "As a competitor, I want to play at all times". Then again, no one really expected the Cardinals to start the season with three losses in their first four games, either.

The Jets (1-5) return home to face the slumping Baltimore Ravens (3-3), who have dropped three straight, on Sunday.

Maybe the Cardinals clicked so well offensively in 2015 that they could run and pass when they wanted, and what they did on the ground was naturally overshadowed by all the bombs collected down the field by a star-studded cast of receivers. The only time Carson Palmer threw long was on a "free play" after the Jets jumped offside. When Ivory gained 80 yards on the ground, NY went 5-2 last season and when he didn't, they were 5-4. They were 0 for 8 before converting one during their long third-quarter drive.

Beating bad teams does not a good team make, but good teams beat up on bad teams. That's exactly what the Cardinals did Monday night. Smith came in during the fourth quarter, but Bowles said it was a mop up move, not something that indicates Fitzpatrick will get benched. Against the Jets, the coaching staff let DJ lead the way, and it paid dividends.

"He's a Jersey guy and a Philly guy", Arians said. Teammates Larry Fitzgerald and Patrick Peterson, elite players at their positions call him "special" and even "very, very special". "They came when they came and we capitalized on them".

"I think we're finding out a lot about ourselves each week", Arians said. Earl Watford in particular had a fantastic game, creating holes all night for DJ to run through. There was eight minutes left in the game. Overall, the team rushed for 170 yards behind the line. It's so early in the season. "We took a couple shots, but really, they forced us to get rid of the ball quick". That's Coach Arians' motto.

On Sunday night, the Cardinals will host the 4-1 Seahawks in a game that will not decide their season, but give a solid indication of where it might be heading. The Cardinals are now tied with the Chiefs for the most interceptions in the league (nine). It's the most rushing yards San Francisco has allowed since giving up 324 yards to the Los Angeles Rams in 1958. Lose and, well, that would make for three losses in five home games, and likely leave being a Wild Card team as the most reasonable hope. There are 10 games to play, plenty of time to climb back into contention, but the schedule is daunting. Four games into the campaign it was the best-case scenario, and while still not great, the way the Cardinals have reached that mark provides reason for optimism. His sixth pass was intercepted by Cardinals safety Tyrann Mathieu. They would go on to get smoked by the Cardinals, 28-3. "We've just got to clean up some small things".
