Hillary Clinton: Half of Donald Trump supporters in 'basket of deplorables'

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said half the supporters of Republican rival Donald Trump belonged in a "basket of deplorables" of people who were racist, homophobic, sexist, xenophobic, or Islamophobic.

Hillary Clinton said at a Friday night LGBT fundraiser that half of Trump's supporters can be put in a "basket of deplorables".

Given about 40 percent of Americans support Trump in the polls, Clinton appeared to be slapping the "racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic" label on about 20 percent of the country. "Let me just say, no one with her record of failure at home and overseas, no with her avalanche of dishonesty and corruption, and no one with that low opinion of the American people should ever be elected president". "I regret saying "half" - that was wrong", she statements/2016/09/10/statement-from-hillary-clinton/" target="_blank">said in a statement.

Mr Luntz tweeted after Mrs Clinton's comments swept through social media: "Hillary Clinton just insulted millions of hard-working Americans simply because they don't want to vote for her". "Hillary Clinton should be ashamed of herself, and this proves beyond a doubt that she is unfit and incapable to serve as president of the United States".

On Saturday, Clinton's staff said she attended another fundraiser at the Armonk, New York, home of attorney David Boies.

Republican vice presidential candidate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence speaks to the Value Voters Summit in Washington, Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016. "And (Trump) has lifted them up".

Nick Merrill, Clinton's traveling press secretary, defended her comments on Twitter Friday. "They are Americans and they deserve your respect", Pence said.

She reiterated that point in her statement Saturday, saying many of Trump's supporters are "hard-working Americans" who feel marginalised.

Since he installed new campaign leadership about three weeks ago, Trump has softened his tone on the campaign trail and mostly stuck to prepared rally speeches loaded onto teleprompters. During her remarks, she talked about the year's "volatile political environment" and said that to be "grossly generalistic", Trump's supporters could be put into two categories.

"I know there are only 60 days left to make our case, and don't get complacent", Clinton said.

There Clinton bemoaned the people she described as "deplorables", saying "unfortunately there are people like that".

Tim Kaine (D-VA), said that Clinton did not need to apologize for her comments.

"Just when Hillary Clinton said she was going to start running a positive campaign, she ripped off her mask and revealed her true contempt for everyday Americans", he said.

Trump, a NY businessman who has never run for political office before, regularly says things that some consider insulting, racist or off-color.

In fact, however, Clinton's aides had invited reporters to watch her remarks at the fundraiser - something they often do not do (and Trump's campaign nearly never does) - and she had previously used a version of the "deplorable" remark in an interview.

"Basket of Deplorables" quickly became a trending hashtag on Twitter.

Breitbart.com, the champion of the alt-right, is already gleefully comparing Clinton's to Mitt Romney's infamous 47% comment, which was also made at a fundraiser. "I will be President for all of the people, and together we will Make America Great Again".

On Friday night, Clinton said that Trump has "given voice" to "irredeemable" individuals who engage in "offensive, hateful, mean-spirited rhetoric".
