EpiPen costs to be slashed for some patients amid wave of criticism

The injection contains a chemical that stops the closing of air passages during a severe allergic reaction.

In a news release Thursday, the West Virginia Democrat says he plans a detailed review of drugmaker Mylan's response to criticism about the cost of EpiPens.

Bresch defended the price hike by pointing to the marketing and distribution costs of EpiPens.

"It's just the latest troubling example of a company taking advantage of its consumers", says Clinton, who also slammed another drug company, Martin Shkreli's Turing Pharmaceuticals, for increasing the price of the HIV treatment Daraprim by a staggering 5000 percent.

Appearing on CNBC early Thursday, Bresch, herself the daughter of a US Senator, Democrat Joe Manchin, said prices had fallen on 600 Mylan products, but that commercial pressures drove the company's pricing decisions.

Clinton and many members of Congress on Wednesday demanded to know why the hike was necessary.

Also, the pharmacies at Heritage Valley Health System fill roughly 150 two-pack EpiPen prescriptions each year, he said. It doubled the limit for eligibility for its patient assistance program, so a family of four making up to $97,200 would pay nothing out of pocket.

The list price for a pair of EpiPens has been raised repeatedly from $93.88 in 2007, when Mylan acquired the product, according to Elsevier Clinical Solutions' database of prices set by manufacturers. She said pharmaceutical companies should have to explain price increases and show what benefits and value have been added.

For thousands of Americans, the EpiPen is a livesaver. It pointed out its savings programs for patients and free EpiPens for schools, with around half of USA schools participating. "All involved must also take steps to help meaningfully address the USA health care crisis, and we are committed to do our part to drive change in collaboration with policymakers, payers, patients and health care professionals".

Although her family doesn't qualify for the discount, she says she's happy it will help others.

With a near-monopoly on the manufacture of the epinephrine injectors, Mylan said Thursday it would expand existing programs to defray out-of-pocket costs for many users.
