Bears' Jay Cutler will avoid surgery for now, teammates not as lucky

Throw in all the injuries Monday night - quarterback Jay Cutler (right thumb), linebackers Lamarr Houston (torn ACL) and Danny Trevathan (thumb sprain), tackle Eddie Goldman (high ankle sprain), defensive backs Adrian Amos (concussion) and Bryce Callahan (concussion) and running back Ka'Deem Carey (hamstring) - and you shudder to think who their replacements will be. The Rams, of course, took Goff and the Eagles took Wentz.

Wentz has certainly exceeded expectations. They're ranked fourth in yards allowed and have allowed the second-fewest points (that includes a punt return for a TD ).

"I'm fine with that", he said of the linebacker confronting him, via Adam L. Jahns of the Chicago Sun-Times. I'm excited. The sky is the limit with this defense.

Wentz has a long way to go to match Big Ben's brilliant rookie season (let alone his career), but he's off to a great start. Burton, the team's third tight end on the roster, blew head coach Doug Pederson away last spring when the team first got together under their new coach. He brought an aggressive, 4-3 scheme and is maximizing the talent he has. The Spokesman-Review Washington State University President Kirk Schulz said Monday he's confident in his athletics department's handling of the arrests of four football players. While the Cleveland Browns and the Chicago Bears are poised to be awful football teams this season, here are five signs that Wentz is the next franchise quarterback for the Eagles. They also have stockpiled many more picks for the 2017 draft. Next week they face the Steelers, featuring a defense that is a far cry from the dominate days of old but still more formidable than the sieves the Eagles have faced the first two weeks of the season. Manning went 3-13 with the Colts in 1998. That has pushed Bears coach John Fox and his staff into a heightened sense of urgency as they try to overcome an 0-2 start and a rash of injuries.

The now 2-0 Eagles were much more dominant than the 9-7 half-time lead suggests, with the Bears only keeping themselves in the contest thanks to some stingy defence close to their goalline.

Now, neither the Browns nor the Bears are National Football League offensive heavyweights, and we'll get a better gauge of the defense's strengths and weaknesses this week when they go up against Ben Roethlisberger and the 2-0 Steelers. In the intermediate distance of 11-15 yards past the line of scrimmage, Wentz is a little bit better as he's completed 7 of 10 attempts. Carson has the ability to extend plays with his legs. "He showed toughness in the pocket, great command of this offense, no turnovers". Wentz has a lot of raw talent, but he did play at a run-first FCS school in college.

"So, yeah, there are a lot of similarities there. And the fact that they're both very good throwers outside the pocket is a tribute to both of them".

But another big one came on the strip-sack by undrafted free agent Destiny Vaeao that teammate Connor Barwin said "turned the game". LB Mychal Kendricks broke his nose and has a quadriceps contusion, but is expected to play vs. Pittsburgh.
