TS Gaston expected to become hurricane Wednesday

The system is called as 99L, has the likely to become Tropical Depression Eight and Tropical Storm Hermine later this week.

A budding tropical disturbance Invest-99L?map=model" target="_blank">has the potential to strengthen significantly and reach Florida with strong winds, coastal flooding and torrential rainfall on Sunday and Monday.

Doug Berry, meteorologist with the National Weather Center in Charleston, said the storm is slowly moving westward and its path will be determined by a high-pressure ridge.

"The exact track of 99L will have a big impact on when the system strengthens", AccuWeather hurricane expert Dan Kottlowski said.

Hurricane hunters have detected winds up past tropical storm force with a few squalls in and around the tropical disturbance today. Fizzling Tropical Depression Fiona and budding Tropical Storm Gaston are of little concern, but a much weaker undeveloped tropical "something" - presently referred as Invest 99 by the meteorological community - is creating quite a stir on social media.

"Conditions could become more conducive later this week while the system moves nears the southeastern and central Bahamas", he said.

At 5 a.m., center of Tropical Storm Gaston was located 975 miles west of Cabo Verde Islands, moving west-northwest near 17 mph.

This is a developing story.

Formation chance through 48 hours: 50 percent.

And the chances that what's called a tropical wave will grow into a unsafe storm during the next 48 hours are now just 40 percent, National Hurricane Center spokesman Dennis Feltgen told NBC News.

Merwin said it is possible that nothing will form from the latest tropical interest, but heavy rain is expected in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, where flash flood watches have been issued.

Gaston's maximum sustained winds had increased Tuesday to 65 miles per hour. While Gaston is expected to be a hurricane for several days, it, too, will move harmlessly through the open waters of the Atlantic as it curves out to sea well east of Bermuda.
