Kelly: Kaepernick To Play On Thursday, Gabbert To Sit Out

Baalke has yet to comment on Kaepernick's national-anthem protest or roster standing.

Despite leading the team to the playoffs just three seasons ago, Kaepernick may be lucky to even make San Francisco's 2016 roster.

Kelly also said his conversations with Kaepernick have been all about football.

The plan all along, according to Kelly, was to keep all four quarterbacks on the roster for the Chargers game on September 1.

"We knew we were not going to release any quarterbacks at the cut to 75, so we haven't had a discussion about the quarterbacks position", Kelly said.

If it's your decision, would this strictly be based on football judgments?

In fact, after the camera crews left, Kaepernick amiably hung around his locker and chatted informally with several of us, confirming for me that he has been a vegan for nine months and saying he feels great because of it.

Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert are still competing to be the 49ers' starting quarterback for the opening game of the regular season on September 12 against the Los Angeles Rams, Kelly said. "Any decisions on this team are made through everybody".

"And I do not have control of the 53-man roster". There's always input. The final say is Trent's, and that's the way it should be. All I can do is tell the media I consider him one of the two best quarterbacks on my team. "We've got to move forward and see if we can get him some more snaps".

According to Matt Maiocco of, 49ers coach Chip Kelly said that Kaepernick was going to play in Thursday's preseason finale, and that he's one of the two best quarterbacks on the roster. "Like we've said all along, we recognize his right to express his feelings. You don't want to leave yourself short".

"We've got a real cooperative relationship".

A California sheriff's office wants Colin Kaepernick to see firsthand what kind of training they go through.

And the Kaepernick situation is gasoline poured on top of their usual amount of brushfires, though he is the one who seemed calmest and most comfortable with all of it Tuesday.
