How Simone Manuel just made Olympic history

Records, as the sporting cliche goes, are there to be broken, but while Simone Manuel's Olympic record time in the women's 100m freestyle final will eventually be surpassed, she achieved a first that no-one can take away.

Manuel not only gave Team USA its first gold medal in that competition in decades, the win marked various firsts for her as well.

Olympic swimmer and gold medalist Simone Manuel spoke out about police brutality on Thursday after becoming the first African-American swimmer to win gold in an individual event. "I hope that I'm an inspiration to others to get out there and try swimming".

Manuel said to BBC News that her win was for the "African-Americans who have been before me and been inspirations", and "the people who come behind me and get into the sport".

Oleksiak becomes the first Canadian to win four medals in a single Summer Games.

Putting the gulf between herself and the rest of the world on full display, the 19-year-old Biles became the fourth straight American woman to win the Olympic all-around title and fifth overall while cementing her reputation as the best of her generation and perhaps ever. Maritza Correia won silver for the 4x100-meter free relay at the Athens Games in 2004.

"That's something I definitely struggled with a lot", she said.

Simone Manuel leaned her head into her hands and cried when she recognized her historic achievement.

"I've always said that I didn't need a gold medal to have self-worth and I guess that that's being put to the test at the moment", said Cate. They noted that she is a three-time world champion in the all around women's competition, and a four-time usa all around champion. But I was like, oh, I'm on the medal stand.

And Manuel hopes she can just be a swimmer and a champion without her race being a factor.

But from there, the Campbells inexplicably fell off. Cate's last 50 was 28.47 seconds, and she finished sixth. Tears rolled down each of Manuel's cheeks as she sang along.

She smiled again, history hanging around her neck, this first O Canada of the Games fresh in everyone's mind, and who knows what's to come - at 16, this Child shall lead, you'd think, for as many more years to come as she wants and is able.

One Twitter user discussed the importance of Manuel's win in the context of Dorothy Dandridge, a 20th-century African-American actress and singer.

Michael Phelps - Given that the show has wanted him for years, we'd be surprised if it actually happened this fall. "I have friends who really want to pursue sports, but because of cultural barriers they weren't able to".

"I'm very excited and relieved, I've finally done it".

Biles hopes to add an individual all-around gold in gymnastics to her collection of three world championship titles and a team Rio gold.

But she would prefer that people focus on the gold medal rather than her race.

Manuel was swimming her own 50-meter heat Friday morning and didn't get to hear the words of her fellow trailblazers.
