Chief says slain Georgia officer a 'humble guy'

A law enforcement source with knowledge of Saturday's killing of Eastman police officer Timothy Smith told The Telegraph that Deeds had only recently begun "hanging out" in an area on the south side of downtown Eastman where Smith was fatally shot. The website of the Nassau County Sheriff's Office in Florida says Deeds was booked into jail just before 3 a.m. Monday.

Dutton said Deeds, 24, then fled the scene. He said one his deputies spotted the auto early Monday traveling south on USA 1. His sister, Frashawn Shanae Deeds, and a passenger, Jamil Mitchell, were also arrested.

On Monday, Florida police arrested two other people found in the vehicle with Deeds: His sister, Franshawn Deeds, 22, and her boyfriend Jamil Mitchell, 32, the GBI said.

Twenty-four-year-old Royheem Delshawn Deeds was apprehended about 1 a.m. Monday during a traffic stop in Nassau County, Florida.

They face charges related to the case and were in custody in Florida awaiting extradition to Georgia with Royheem Deeds, according to the statement.

Authorities released few details about the events the led to the shooting.

"A deputy observed the vehicle traveling southbound, and called another deputy and they both stopped the vehicle", Leeper said.

Authorities said the 911 call came in at about 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

"He pulls up, he sees who he thinks the call was about and starts to talk to him", Dutton said. "And things happened really quick".

It's unclear how authorities identified Deeds as a suspect. When Smith got to the location, authorities say he got out of his patrol vehicle to investigate and had a conversation with Deeds. "A citizen had reported suspicious activity, which is what (the officer) encountered".

Smith, who had been with the Eastman Police Department since 2011, was transported to an area hospital, but he later died.

Smith, a father of three, could have turned 31 on Monday, authorities said.

Smith's father, Lewis Smith, is employed with Glenwood police in Wheeler County, which is less than an hour from where the shooting took place, GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles said.
