Australia among qualifiers as sevens debuts

During her high school career in Eagle River, Alaska at Chugiak High School, Kelter played soccer, flag football and boys hockey for the Mustangs.

It's not the dominant performance they wanted, but the Canadians are now just one win away from playing for medals, something the veterans on this team have been thinking about for the last five years. "She doesn't think about her self much, she's always about the team". Kelter, 25, was new to the sport in 2014, a convert only because she had stalled in the Olympic developmental programs in soccer and hockey.

Scarratt scored two second-half tries that sealed a 22-0 win and ensured Britain topped Pool C ahead of a quarter-final appearance - probably against Fiji or the United States of America - later on Sunday.

Her teammate Kayla McAlister celebrated her birthday with two tries in each game. "I actually hadn't thought about that. So I'm really proud".

Victoria's Ryan Cochrane failed to qualify for the finals of the men's 400-metre freestyle on Saturday at the Rio Games, falling short of the medal round for a third straight Olympics. Unfortunately the game of sevens is quite ruthless.

The version of rugby being played here, called rugby sevens, offers fast end-to-end action in games with two seven-minute halves, two-minute halftimes and lots of crushing tackles.

At the 2009 International Ice Hockey Federation Women's Under-18 World Championship, Kelter led the USA hockey team to a gold medal.

In the men's 10m air pistol, South Korea's Jin Jongoh can become the second shooter after Wang Yifu of China to win the event in two Olympic Games.

The lopsided scores in some of the matches may have detracted from the experience for a boisterous crowd which at best half-filled the 15,000-seater Deodoro Stadium but World Rugby chief executive Brett Gosper was happy. "You've got to use all the energy you have". Johnson said. "And you're there with your buddies". Baravilala played basketball and ran track at Radford. She tried out for the national rugby team, the Eagles, basically on a whim.

Captain Jen Kish and Ghislaine Landry looked at each other, hands on their heads, and smiled.

Her moment of redemption came at the end of the match with France: With just a second left on the clock she leapt for a pass, wove through the blue defence to slide with the ball over the try line, then shot a mile into the air, her disastrous day at least in part redeemed.

In contrast, rugby is the national sport in Fiji, where 80,000 of the total population of 880,000 - nearly 1 in 10 - play the game.

In United States' first foray into the sport in almost a century, it lost, 12-7, to Fiji and came back in the evening to trounce Colombia, 48-0.

"They're pretty awesome, just the connection they have", USA forward Kathryn Johnson said.

Even before the final conversion attempt, the Canadians knew they had won and were heading to the Olympic semifinals, but there was a pause before they started celebrating. "They're really wonderful girls as it is, on and off the field".

The Canadians entered as the likely bronze medalists, but now face Australia in the semifinals - which doesn't entirely bother them.

Watmore has played both rugby union and rugby league, but now specialises in sevens rugby.

The Australians did not have any trouble against Spain, winning 24-0.

"We're just going to focus on the simple things", Kelter said.

"We will keep working on ourselves".

After those ugly 14 minutes, Canada's rugby medal quest suddenly appeared a much longer shot.
