Lin-Manuel Miranda's emotional sonnet was just what the Tonys needed

Tony Awards dedicate ceremony to Orlando victims

Lin-Manuel Miranda's biography about the first US Treasury Secretary won 11 Tonys, just short of the 12-Tony record held by The Producers.

For the first time ever, all of the musical acting categories were awarded to people of color.

The biggest nominee of the night, with 16 nominations, Hamilton musical cast opened the show in the signatory style.

Featured Actress in a Musical: Renée Elise Goldsberry won Hamilton's first acting award for her performance in the musical. "She nudges me towards promise by degrees".

The awards' 70th annual ceremony was overshadowed by the mass shooting at a gay club in Orlando, Florida that killed dozens of people this past weekend, with many speeches making reference to it and host James Corden saying, "Our hearts go out to all those affected by this atrocity". Tonight's show stands as a symbol and a celebration of that principle. "We live through times when hate and fear seem stronger".

The Tony Awards, the biggest night in Broadway, dedicated its star-studded ceremony to the victims of the Orlando massacre, the deadliest terror attack in America since September 11, 2001. Other winners included Ivo van Hove, best director of a play for "A View from the Bridge", which also won best revival of a play.

Featured Actor in a Musical: Daveed Diggs won for playing the duel roles of the Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson. I hadn't heard about the day's events until after our Tony rehearsal.

For Best leading Actor in a Musial, Aaron Burr again bested Alexander Hamilton. He nearly teared up when he mentioned his brother's struggle with dementia.

The cast of Hamilton performs at the Tony Awards at the Beacon Theatre. It is the largest audience for the show since 2001.

Donald Trump was a frequent target.

Want more stuff like this? There was also a joke about Trump starring in "The Book of Moron".

"This is not the end of anything", Miranda told Entertainment Tonight on the red carpet at the Tony Awards. (Miranda first performed a snippet of the musical-in-progress in 2009 at the White House.) Even more astonishing was that one nearly felt as if the first couple were the ones hitching their wagons to a star. In 2014, it reached 7.02 million and captured 7.24 million in 2013.
