Lenovo announces Tango-enabled augmented reality smartphone

The phones will be available globally in September.

In an effort to build on the Google Tango augmented reality pitch, Lenovo is demonstrating it with the aid of virtual-reality based apps ranging from games to educational apps.

NDTV reported that the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro smartphone consist of Project Tango's technology with 4 cameras. The phablet has been made by Lenovo in collaboration with Google. The last of which is the most exciting due to it being the first phone with Google's Project Tango technology. Johnny Lee, the engineering director at Google, said in a statement that "Tango enables our devices to sense physical motion and space and, as a result, has the power to change how we interact with our surroundings".

For example, it could be used to remodel a home by moving the handset around a room and placing virtual Minecraft-style blocks to create walls and eventually structures.

Jeff Meredith, vice president and general manager of Android and Chrome computing at Lenovo, explained that the company wants to take Project Tango from a concept to a reality. "From the moment we saw Tango, we knew it could become pervasive, just like Global Positioning System".

The Phab 2 pro will be available in September in USA for $499 (Approx Rs 33,400) while the Phab 2 will retail for $199 (Approx Rs 13,300) and the Phab 2 Plus will set you back $299 (Approx Rs 20,000). To make things easier for users, Google also plans to make 25 Tango apps available in the Google Play Store close to the time when the phone is released. The multiple cameras placed at the back panel work in tandem to bring improved augmented reality effect on the handset display.

The premium smartphone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 processor and features Dolby Audio Capture 5.1 with Dolby Atmos playback capabilities The 6.4-inch PHAB2 Pro boasts an intelligent Assertive Display with sharp QHD (2,560x1,440). It comes in two color options: Champagne Gold and Gunmetal Grey. Lenovo Phab 2 Pro runs Android 6.0 Marshmallow and has a fingerprint scanner and a beefy 4,050mAh battery.
