Independence Day: Resurgence lacks the excitement and charm of its predecessor

Lucy O'Brien at IGN gave it a mixed write-up, declaring: "A silly, cheesy, spectacle-driven blockbuster with heart, Independence Day: Resurgence is a refreshing antidote to the grim and the serious sentiment we've seen trending in sci-fi flicks of recent years".

For an actor who starred in "Spaceballs" and David Lynch's "Lost Highway", and performed in Edward Albee and David Mamet plays on Broadway, "Independence Day" is an unlikely touchstone.

No, I can't say for sure if he actually did watch the first "Independence Day".

But Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum being able to hack into overwhelmingly superior alien technology and Randy Quaid finishing off an alien mother ship makes all the sense in the world. Adding new writers Nicolas Wright and James A. Woods, Emmerich and Devlin set to work in creating a story that would reunite heroes from the first film with new stars to be cast in Independence Day: Resurgence.

Jeff, who was married to actress Patricia Gaul and his The Fly co-star Geena Davis, revealed he only thought about starting a family when he met his current spouse, Olympic gymnast Emilie Livingston.

When asked how Emmerich has changed as a filmmaker over the years, Goldblum said, "As a human being, he's still the same person. If Roland thinks his direction is right, that's what I'm going to go with because he has a real certainty about him about what is right".

Wedding bells soon for Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus?

But Empire was more positive, saying you might even forget the star from the first film is missing. "Before we started shooting for this film, I revisited my character and it was educational, enlightening and really fascinating".

Liam Hemsworth in Independence Day: Resurgence. Levinson is now the director of the Earth Space Defense program, an organization responsible for preventing another alien attack.

"It's a movie that is going through the intergalactic motions", said The Guardian.

Morrison's disregard for authority gets him in trouble at the beginning of the movie, but it could very well be what saves the world at the end of the day. "Oh yes. I'd never, ever let someone else do it". Technically speaking, the time in which the first film was produced feels like the Stone Age, said the director.

The short attention span has grown even shorter, everyone's on an accelerated schedule of some kind (even the aliens), and people just don't seem to appreciate the value of a good build-up any more.

Demonstrating versatility and skill in a range of performances, Hemsworth has proven to be one of the most sought-after actors of his generation.
