Penguins Maatta out for Game 3 against Washington

Expect that to continue especially as the series goes on.

Washington Capitals defenseman Brooks Orpik has been suspended three games for his late hit to the head of Pittsburgh defenseman Olli Maatta in game two of the National Hockey League second-round series Saturday. After the hit, it was expected to be a major penalty, however the defenseman only received a penalty for interference.

Washington's Brooks Orpik suspended three games for interference on Pittsburgh's Olli Maatta.

They will have to use either Dmitry Orlov (a healthy scratch in Game 2 following a poor Game 1) or Mike Weber to go along with Taylor Chorney (who only played 10:50 in Games 2) and Nate Schmidt (11:00) as the bottom 3. This hit made it so that Maata would end up sitting the rest of the game.

In the meantime, the Penguins are without Maatta for the foreseeable future. They'll be much more aggressive in Game 3.

That is only because the league so badly missed the mark on the Bellemare suspension, and not because they were too harsh on Orpik because of who the Capitals are playing. Fehr found himself receiving a nice pass from Evgeni Malkin, which Fehr was able to re direct this pass and put it in the back of the net. "It's going to be equal for every team".

Pittsburgh blocked a lot of shots and didn't allow the Capitals to have a lot of zone time, leading to Washington's low shot total. Pittsburgh finished the game with a plus-11 differential in shots and plus-25 differential in shot attempts. The Penguins play the Capitals at 8 p.m. Monday night at the Consol Energy Center. "Obviously, it's different being in a game situation, but you have to be ready". "It didn't look good".

Brooks Orpik won't be taking the ice with the Washington Capitals Monday night. "So we'll just move forward". We can't mitigate the punishment because it came at an inopportune time for a player's team. "It's a hit that probably shouldn't happen and they took care of it, like they usually do". If they can convert on at least a few of those good opportunities the Penguins will have a huge edge. There is always an expectation of one-game suspensions be handed out during the postseason because one playoff game can determine a series. Given the recklessness of the hit, the team knew this was coming. "You just have to play within the rules and hope they get it right". It was a scary-looking play, one that could have had serious consequences for the Russian defenceman, but he managed to get his arm out and wasn't seriously injured. "We've still got to focus on what we have to do out there".
