1st Zika Virus Case Confirmed in Rockland County

Puerto Rico has 22 confirmed Zika cases.

The issue is that many people who contract Zika virus might not know they have it. Only 1 in 5 people who have Zika develop symptoms, and those symptoms are typically mild: fatigue, aches, pain, and a skin rash.

The UNFPA said there is no vaccine or any specific treatment for the Zika virus infection till date. The virus was deemed active, meaning that it was able to cause infection, but the scientists stressed that it was too early to say whether Zika could be transmitted by either fluid.

Brazil has seen 4,783 suspected cases of babies born with small brains, although only 404 of them have been confirmed, 709 have been rejected and 3,670 are still being investigated.

Meanwhile, in Geneva, spokeswoman Cecile Pouilly said the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights was asking governments in Zika-affected countries in Latin America and the Caribbean to repeal any policies that restrict access to sexual and reproductive health services, including abortion.

"In light of the possibility of being in contact with someone who is infected, do not kiss, obviously", Dr. Paulo Gadelha, the foundation's president, told reporters.

The guidance, issued by the CDC, also said the men might consider abstaining or using condoms even during sex with a woman who isn't pregnant.

But the city remains steadfast in its efforts to not let fears of the Zika virus and growing concerns over recent budget cuts overshadow the buildup to the summer games.

Chan made her remarks during an emergency meeting at the United Nations health agency's headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, to assess what is known about the Zika virus and its potential relation to the surge of birth defects in Brazil.

Men with a pregnant sex partner who reside in or have traveled to an area of active Zika virus transmission and their pregnant sex partners should consistently and correctly use condoms during sex (vaginal, anal, or oral) or abstain from sexual activity for the duration of the pregnancy.

The timing, and the fact that numerous mothers were diagnosed with Zika or reported symptoms, have caused alarm over an apparent link with the virus.

The CDC is warning pregnant women against travel to affected areas, and health officials in several of the affected countries are telling women there to avoid becoming pregnant.

"So that also shows that many of these pregnancies are out of their control and countries obviously have to take that into account", she said.

Pregnant women who are not experiencing symptoms consistent with Zika virus can be tested when they begin prenatal care.

Florida's history of fighting off mosquito-borne outbreaks puts the state in perhaps better position than most when it comes to the Zika virus.
