Juan Mata feels the frustration after Manchester United's defeat to Southampton

Louis Van Gaal attempted to quit as Manchester United manager on Saturday, according to reports.

One day somebody at United is giving an off-the-record briefing saying that LVG did offer his resignation; the next day, another source at the club is putting a story out saying that no such offer came.

Next up for United is a trip to face Championship side Derby in the FA Cup fourth round on Friday (kick-off 19:55 GMT).

Fans were left distraught after the performance on Saturday as the Old Trafford local jeered the Dutchman as he made his way down the tunnel.

This unconvincing form and the defeat to Southampton that leaves them five points behind Tottenham Hotspur in the final Champions League berth means Van Gaal's position is again in jeopardy.

"But I can not see anything happening with Van Gaal because, quite simply, if United wanted to get rid of him they would have done it by now". "They have - or they had - great expectations of me, and I can not fulfil them, so I am very frustrated because of that". Van Gaal's compatriots, Daley Blind and Memphis, spent their weekends in the Netherlands.

Further talks are planned in the coming days, with United unsure whether Van Gaal will have changed his stance in deciding the time has come for him to walk away.

Woodward told Van Gaal to speak to his family before making a decision over his future, the newspaper said.

"Because you have to meet expectations and the expectations are very high, that gives a lot of pressure for the players", he said.

"I know that everyone, from the owners and Louis Van Gaal and his team, is working extremely hard to turn that around".

The former United winger, who is now Van Gaal's coach, wants the full backing of the board to transform the team's fortunes.
