Kickstarter launched for 'Mystery Science Theater 3000' reboot

In the not too distant future... we could be getting brand new episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000, courtesy of original human host Joel Hodgson!

Hodgson says that if he can raise $2 million, he could make three feature-length episodes.

Speaking about the campaign to EW, Hodgson says he hopes the campaign will not only raise the needed funds to produce new episodes of the show, but to serve as a sort of MST3K Signal to lure the old gang back onto the Satellite Of Love.

"I've invited everyone from the original cast to come back and participate creatively - to write, and hopefully to do cameos as their Mad Scientist characters", Hodgson said in his AMA.

While revealing that some networks have been interested in airing the “new” Mystery Science Theater 3000 Hodgson explained

The problem is, he's asking for a lot of money: a whopping $2 million will get us three episodes, and $5.5 million gets us a full, 12-episode season.

It makes sense, given so much of what passes for humor on the internet these days is riffing over audio or commentary, the style that MST3K popularized. "Basically, I'm trying to blend the old with the new", Hodgson told Entertainment Weekly.

MST3K aired on Comedy Central and Sci-Fi Channel, lasting 12 years with a total of 197 episodes before it was finally cancelled in 1999.
